How to sell antique furniture and manage a house clearance — what sells, how valuations work, and how selling to a dealer works.

Whether you’ve inherited a houseful of furniture, are downsizing, or simply have a piece that no longer fits, selling antiques can feel daunting — where do you even start? We buy antiques regularly, from single items to complete house clearances, so here’s an honest guide to how it works and how to get the best from it.

First, don’t throw anything away

It’s surprising how often genuinely good pieces — or valuable smaller items like jewellery, silver, pictures and ceramics — get overlooked in a clearance. Before anything goes to the tip or a charity van, it’s worth having someone knowledgeable cast an eye over it. A quick look can save real money.

What sells well

Quality brown furniture with good colour and clean lines — Georgian and country pieces especially.
Decorative items: mirrors, lighting, clocks, bronzes and interesting objects.
French and Continental pieces, and characterful Asian furniture.
Jewellery, silver and collectables — small things that are easy to underestimate.

Condition matters, but don’t be tempted to “do it up” first — a sympathetic dealer would rather see a piece untouched than over-restored.

The simplest start is a few clear photographs by email, with rough measurements and anything you know about a piece’s history. Selling to a dealer vs auction

Auctions can work well for the right piece, but they take time, charge commission, and the result is never certain. Selling to a dealer is quicker and simpler: a fair price, paid promptly, with removal arranged — particularly helpful with a full house to clear against a deadline.
