Asian/Thai
Decorative Asian elephant seats, carved in wood
£2,500
A remarkable pair of Asian seats sculpted as elephants, their bodies and tusks carved from solid wood with great character. Equal parts furniture and sculpture, they make an unforgettable statement in a conservatory, hallway or garden room. A rare and theatrical pair — small wonder pieces like this appeal to interior designers and film-hire teams alike. The Asian Elephant seats are quite extraordinary, we believe them to be Thai dating from approx circa 1900. They have gold lacquer detail, carved in solid wood with highly embellished detail. The harness decoration reflects the symbolic importance of elephants in Thai culture, emblems of strength, protection and royal authority. The seats of the elephants are decorated in the manner of ceremonial howdahs, giving a theatrical presence. There is an element of wear which is commiserate with age, however, the elephants could be displayed as rare art objects or in a setting which where an impressive and highly unusual statement piece is required.
